September Reflections - Change & Transitions

I’m writing this from a cosy café corner, fuelled by a spinach & feta parcel and my trusty decaf oat milk cappuccino. September feels like a “return to” month: routines restarting, change swirling, and self-care suddenly more important than ever.
A month of change and transition
On my ILM Level 7 Exec Coaching course, I was reminded of William Bridges’ idea:
Change = the external event.
Transition = the inner process of working through it.
I thought I loved change, but wow, transition takes energy! Here are my big three this month:
1. Kids back to school
From 24/7 summer chaos to school runs, clubs, and lunch payments… plus trying to raise kind, respectful humans. A transition for them, and for me.
Relationship Changes: Relationships may evolve during this time. Some may strengthen, while others may fade.
2. Health transitions
Moving from treatment into long-term medication and check-ins. It’s been eye-opening to see how my mind and body react, sometimes in tears, sometimes in spirals, and to admit I can’t “plan” my way out of hard feelings. Talking it out (and yes, sometimes crying it out) has been surprisingly powerful.
Health Challenges: As we age, health issues may arise. This can prompt a reevaluation of lifestyle choices.
3. Netball: off-court and on-court
Netball has been my world since primary school, and my club and employer have been my rock this year. I've started coaching the little “Bee-lievers” (aged 5–7) which brings me joy, even if my body isn’t fully ready for league nights just yet. Learning to pace myself is part of the game.
Career or Purpose Changes: Many people find themselves wanting a new job or even a new career path. This can be due to burnout or a desire for something more fulfilling.
Recognizing these changes can help you navigate them more effectively.
Embracing Self-Reflection
Self-reflection is a powerful tool for personal growth. Taking time to think about your life can lead to valuable insights. Here are some ways to practice self-reflection:
Journaling: Writing down your thoughts can help clarify your feelings. Set aside a few minutes each day to jot down what’s on your mind.
Meditation: This practice can help calm your mind and allow for deeper thinking. Even a few minutes a day can make a difference.
Talking to a Friend: Sometimes, discussing your thoughts with someone you trust can provide new perspectives.
Self-reflection can help you understand what you truly want in life.
Three takeaways
1. Start with self-care; it’s the anchor in any transition.
2. Go small, but go; little steps calm big waves (in Dory’s words: just keep swimming.)
3. Find your light; whether it’s people, passions, or moments. And if you can’t find it, share your struggle, others often want to help.
Practicing Self-Care
September is 'self-care month' and is essential during times of change. Taking care of yourself physically and emotionally can help you cope better. Here are some self-care practices to consider:
Exercise Regularly: Physical activity can boost your mood and energy levels. Walking is a great place to start.
Eat Well: A balanced diet can improve your overall health and well-being.
Get Enough Sleep: Quality sleep is crucial for mental clarity and emotional stability.
Engage in Hobbies: Make time for activities you enjoy. This can provide a much-needed break from stress, netball is a good one.
Prioritizing self-care can help you feel more balanced and resilient.
Embracing the Journey Ahead
Autumn is a time of year that can bring a lot of changes which can be daunting, but it also offers a chance for personal growth. By embracing self-reflection, and practicing self-care, you can navigate this period with confidence.
Remember, personal growth is a journey, not a destination. Each step you take brings you closer to a more fulfilling life. Embrace the changes, celebrate your progress, and look forward to the opportunities that lie ahead.

As you move forward, keep in mind that every challenge is an opportunity for growth. Embrace the journey, and you will find that change can be a time of incredible transformation.
