April Reflections - When Things Feel Heavy: Leading Yourself First

Leading yourself well under pressure starts with perspective, choice and self-care.

This month didn’t go to plan. I sat down to write, as I do each month, reflecting on my coaching journey and what I’m learning. But the reality is, life has felt full. A little overwhelming at times.

Work has needed prioritising. Leadership Coaching session conversations have been enriching. And if I’m honest, when I’ve had space, I’ve chosen to read for leisure rather than focus on my course work.

And then came the pressure. The voice that asked: You made a commitment. You’ve already eased off your weekly posts. What will people think?

The Inner Game, Again

It made me pause. Because this wasn’t really about a missed blog or a quieter month on Instagram.

It was about something deeper, the inner dialogue that shows up when things feel out of sync.

The same inner game I wrote about in October. The same search for clarity in November. The same pressure to perform I reflected on in February.

The same self-awareness I explored in March. All showing up, at once. All creeping in and keeping me up in the middle of the night.

When Load Increases, Perspective Can Shrink

As a leader, I see this often and this month, I felt it. When the load increases: priorities compete, energy dips and perspective narrows. We move quickly into reaction mode. And in that space, it’s easy to lose sight of what’s actually within our control.

Control, Influence, and Letting Go

Something I’ve come back to this month is a simple but powerful lens:

What is in my control? What can I influence? And what is out of my control?

When everything feels heavy, we often carry things that were never ours to hold.

For me, that looked like:

  • Trying to control consistency in a season that required flexibility

  • Assuming how others might perceive me

  • Holding myself to standards that didn’t reflect my current reality

 The Power of Choice

This is where the shift happened. I reminded myself that even when things feel overwhelming, we still have choice.

Choice in; how we respond to pressure, how we speak to ourselves, where we place our energy.

This month, my choice was to: prioritise what mattered most in the moment, protect small pockets of rest and accept that slowing down wasn’t failing, it was necessary.

Self-Care Isn’t a Luxury, It’s Leadership

One of the biggest reminders for me has been this: Self-care isn’t something we do when everything else is done. It’s what allows us to think clearly, lead effectively, and make good decisions.

Without it perspective narrows, emotions heighten and decisions become reactive rather than intentional. With it clarity returns, confidence steadies and we reconnect to what really matters.

Three takeaways

1.      When things feel heavy, pause and reset your perspective. Not everything you’re carrying is yours to hold.

2.      Focus on control and influence and consciously let go of the rest. Clarity comes from simplifying where your energy goes.

3.       Self-care is a leadership practice, not a reward. It enables clear thinking, confident decisions, and sustainable performance.

This month hasn’t been perfect. It hasn’t followed the plan but it has been real. And perhaps that’s the point.

Leadership isn’t about always having it together, it’s about noticing when things feel off, and choosing how to respond.

So I’ll leave you with this: When things feel heavy, where can you pause, reset, and choose differently?

As always, thank you for being here.
